The Devgad Alphonso, explained.

Not every Alphonso is the same fruit. Devgad Alphonso is the GI-tagged sub-variety from the Sindhudurg coast — denser, smaller, more aromatic, and a measurably higher sugar-to-acid ratio than Konkan averages.

The terroir nobody tells you about

The Devgad taluka sits on a narrow strip of Konkan coast in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. Three things separate this strip from the rest of the Alphonso belt:

  • Laterite (jambha) soil: red, iron-rich, well-drained. Limits over-watering, concentrates fruit sugars during the dry March–April set.
  • Arabian Sea proximity: daytime sea breeze, lower absolute humidity, longer cool nights at fruit-fill stage.
  • Smaller, older orchards: Devgad's farms average 15–60-year-old grafts on hill terraces, not the high-density young plantations of the broader Konkan.

What the GI tag actually protects

Geographical Indication tag #139 was granted by the Government of India's Geographical Indications Registry. It legally restricts the name "Devgad Alphonso" to fruit grown within the Devgad taluka boundaries. Any "Devgad Hapus" sold on marketplaces from Karnataka or even neighbouring Sangameshwar is, by definition, mislabelled.

How it differs from Ratnagiri Alphonso

Ratnagiri district sits north of Devgad on the same Konkan coast and grows the other GI-tagged Alphonso (GI #138). Side-by-side, Devgad fruit tends to run smaller (220–280g vs 280–340g), with a marginally thinner skin, a more pronounced floral aftertaste, and lower fibre near the stone. Both are excellent — Devgad just runs "denser".
