Poor packaging is the #1 reason parcels arrive damaged. It can also increase your shipping cost if oversized boxes trigger volumetric weight charges. This guide covers how to pack any type of item for safe, cost-effective courier delivery in India.

General Packaging Rules

  1. Use a new or sturdy box — Reused boxes lose structural strength. If reusing, ensure no old labels remain.
  2. Fill all empty space — Use crumpled newspaper, bubble wrap, or packing peanuts. Items shouldn't shift inside the box.
  3. Seal with packing tape — Use 2-inch brown packing tape on all seams. Cello tape is not strong enough.
  4. Label clearly — Write the recipient's full name, address, pincode, and phone number. Add "FRAGILE" if applicable.
  5. Keep a copy of the label inside — In case the outer label gets damaged, the inner label helps identify the package.

How to Pack Specific Items

Fragile Items (Glass, Ceramics, Electronics)

  • Wrap each item individually in bubble wrap (at least 2 layers)
  • Place in a box with 5+ cm of padding on all sides
  • Use dividers between multiple items
  • Mark "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" on at least two sides
  • For electronics: use anti-static bubble wrap and include silica gel packets

Documents and Papers

  • Use a rigid cardboard mailer or poly mailer, not a plain paper envelope
  • For important documents: use a clear plastic sleeve inside the mailer
  • For certificates or photos: insert cardboard stiffeners to prevent bending

Clothing and Fabrics

  • Fold neatly and place in a poly bag (protects against moisture)
  • Use a poly mailer for single items — cheaper than a box
  • For multiple items or expensive clothing: use a box with tissue paper

Food Items (Dry/Packaged Only)

  • Only non-perishable, sealed food can be couriered
  • Double-seal any containers that could leak
  • Use insulated packaging for chocolate (melts in Indian summers)
  • Pack snacks and sweets in rigid boxes to prevent crushing

Heavy Items (5+ kg)

  • Use double-walled corrugated boxes
  • Reinforce the bottom with extra tape (H-taping pattern)
  • Distribute weight evenly — don't put all heavy items on one side
  • For items over 20 kg: consider wooden crating

How to Reduce Shipping Costs with Smart Packaging

Couriers charge by actual weight or volumetric weight — whichever is higher. Volumetric weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000.

This means a large but light box costs more than a compact one:

Box SizeActual WeightVolumetric WeightCharged Weight
40 × 30 × 20 cm1 kg4.8 kg4.8 kg (ouch!)
25 × 20 × 15 cm1 kg1.5 kg1.5 kg (better)
20 × 15 × 10 cm1 kg0.6 kg1 kg (actual wins)

Tips to save:

  • Use the smallest box that fits your item with adequate padding
  • Poly mailers are cheaper and lighter than boxes for soft goods
  • Remove excess packaging from products before shipping
  • Stock 3–4 box sizes to match different products
